It is not usual for an investigator to recommend the use of a formula or constant without showing in detail how his results are obtained. The wisdom of not accepting Dr. Doberck's first formula is now evident. I had no means of Judging whether it was the best possible representation of his observations, and from the table forwarded with his letter of 1. 3. 18, it appears that even his latest formula does not accurately represent the observations on which it is supposed to be based.

§ 6 & 7 Dr. Doberck's recommendations. no change in contemplated here until we hear further from Sir Napier Shaw, with whom and with Dr. Walker I have no doubt we shall come to an agreement.

Further correspondence with Dr. Doberck will serve no useful purpose. The action taken by this Observatory has attracted the attention of the British and Indian Meteorolo- -gical Services to an unsatisfactory state of affairs, and will, I trust, produce some improvement in the method of making and reducing hygrometric observations.
